The Best Parks to Walk in Houston [Updated 2023]

Buffalo Bayou Park

The park is huge and filled with tree-lined trails, scenic views, and plenty of open space. With lush green lawns and winding pathways, it's the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I especially love how there's something for everyone at Buffalo Bayou Park. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk in nature or an adventure through winding trails, this park has it all! The park also offers plenty of wonderful activities such as kayaking, bike rides, fishing, and picnic areas. Plus, the occasional concerts make it even more of a treat for visitors.

What's great about Buffalo Bayou Park is that it's well maintained with plenty of restrooms and benches scattered throughout so there's never an issue in finding a spot to take a break. Plus all the facilities are kept clean which makes the park even more enjoyable.

Overall, I highly recommend this park if you're looking for one of the best parks to walk in Houston. From its stunning views and activities to its well-maintained facilities and pleasant atmosphere; Buffalo Bayou Park definitely lives up to its reputation as one of Houston's premier parks!

Terry Hershey Park

The park is located along the Buffalo Bayou, so it's scenic and peaceful. I love walking with the sound of birds and other wildlife in the background. Plus, there are two bridges that provide excellent views of the surrounding area.

The trails are well-maintained and easy to navigate – no matter if you're a beginner or an experienced hiker. I've been able to find a variety of different paths from easier, flat terrain to hilly routes with challenging inclines.

The weather in Houston can be unpredictable, but luckily Terry Hershey Park has something for all seasons. In the summer months, they offer shade structures and benches to take a break by the water. In winter, the streams become icy but still make for a beautiful experience.

While I was visiting, I noticed many amenities like restrooms and designated picnic areas that made my experience even better! Not to mention there is plenty of parking available - so it's easy to get around! Overall, Terry Hershey Park is one of the best parks to walk in Houston and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves outdoor activities!

White Oak Bayou Greenway Access

The location is great, it's located on the northside, not far from downtown. It offers a great view of the bayou, and also has easy access to public transportation and plenty of parking options nearby. The park itself is spacious and well maintained, with many paths going through and around it.

The trails here are perfect for walking or jogging due to their flatness, so even if you're not an avid hiker or runner you can still enjoy the park! There are also plenty of benches around if you need a break while taking in the stunning views along the way.

In addition to these features, White Oak Bayou Greenway Access has some amazing amenities such as an amphitheater, picnic tables and even a playground if you have kids with you. It's also home to many events throughout the year including concerts, movie nights and art festivals.

Overall I'd give White Oak Bayou Greenway Access five stars. It definitely deserves its place as one of Houston's best parks to walk!

Paul Carr Jogging Trail Park

The park offers a number of trails to explore, ranging from easy to moderate. The paths throughout the park are well-kept, and there's plenty of shade as you walk along thanks to the many trees lining the trails. Additionally, there are plenty of benches along the way for resting or simply enjoying the view.

I really appreciate that Paul Carr Jogging Trail Park has a few options when it comes to terrain: asphalt, woodchips, and natural dirt surfaces. Whether I want a more challenging hike or something with some extra cushioning for my feet, I can easily find what I'm looking for here.

The park is also large enough to accommodate runners, cyclists and other trail users without feeling too crowded. As someone who gets anxious around crowds in nature, this was a big bonus for me!

Safety is also important when visiting any park/trail and I am happy to report that Paul Carr Jogging Trail Park has adequate lighting so anyone walking at night will feel safe. What's more, many parts of the trails are monitored by cameras so visitors can feel even more secure while they explore the park.

All in all, Paul Carr Jogging Trail Park is one of the best parks to walk in Houston because it provides an enjoyable and safe experience no matter what kind of surface you feel like walking on. Highly recommended!

Eleanor Tinsley Park

I visited Eleanor Tinsley Park for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the park. The park offers a variety of walking options with trails that loop around so you can choose your desired distance and difficulty. You will find yourself surrounded by lush foliage, towering trees, and wildflowers in bloom as you make your way through paths lined with thick grass.

The scenery is one of the best parts about this park – it's easy to forget you're in downtown Houston! If you are lucky, you may even get to see some local wildlife like ducks or herons. In addition, there are many benches throughout the park so you can take a break and relax during your walk.

Furthermore, Eleanor Tinsley Park offers plenty of amenities for a perfect day out. There is an outdoor stage, skatepark, free interpretive center, picnic areas, and more that help make this park an ideal spot for family outings or to just get away from the noise of city life.

All in all, Eleanor Tinsley Park gets my highest recommendation as one of the best parks to walk in Houston. It truly is a hidden gem if you want to escape into nature without leaving town!

Sesquicentennial Park

This park is named after the 150th anniversary of Houston's founding in 1836 and spans over sixty acres. I'm always impressed at how much green space is available - from large areas of grass to small gardens, it really has something for everyone.

The trails are well maintained with plenty of places to sit and rest along the way. The architecture and landscaping adds character to the experience, especially the three fountains which provide a sense of tranquility as you walk past them.

What really sets Sesquicentennial Park apart is that there's something for everyone! Whether it's a leisurely stroll, an intense jog, or just looking out at the skyline from one of the gazebos that overlooks downtown Houston, this park has it all. Even my dog loves it - there’s plenty of nice pathways he can explore while I take in the sights.

Overall, Sesquicentennial Park is one of my favorite parks to walk around in Houston! It's easily accessible by road or on foot so no matter where you are in town you can find your way here with minimal effort.

Memorial Park

This glorious park stretches out over 1,500 acres making it one of the largest urban parks in the United States. And there is so much to explore with its stunning scenic paths for walking and running, playgrounds to take the kids, and even a golf course.

I especially love the incredible number of trees that can be found throughout the park. The vibrant colors of fall bring an extra beauty to an already incredible park. There are also plenty of spots to relax and reflect on nature's wonders which makes it perfect for taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The trails make for an ideal way to explore Memorial Park with winding paths that take you across various terrains such as grass, gravel, and dirt. You can also take a leisurely bike ride along the roads or trails without worrying about any traffic!

What makes this park stand out is the abundance of wildlife you can find here like deer, birds, turtles, and even coyotes! It's amazing seeing animals in their natural habitat while getting some exercise in at the same time.

In short, Memorial Park is truly one of the best parks to walk in Houston! I highly recommend visiting this wonderful place whether you're just looking for some relaxation or wanting to discover something new about our city.
