The gardens are filled with lush greens and blooming flowers, making it a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s also home to American decorative arts from the colonial period through the Gilded Age, which is something I never expected to find in Houston!
I really enjoyed walking through the galleries and seeing the incredible history presented before me. Not to mention, they have some of the best outdoor exhibits I've ever seen--with sculptures, pathways, reflecting pools, and fountains that transport you back in time.

Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern
☎️ 713-752-0314
This incredible underground architectural gem is like no other. It houses over 2 million gallons of water and is an amazing sight to behold. The vaulted ceilings and pillars provide an atmosphere that feels almost surreal, especially when surrounded by the sounds of live classical music which is one of the many events they host throughout the year.
The tours are incredibly informative, giving visitors insight into the history behind this beautiful space (which used to serve as a public drinking water source) and how it fits into Houston's overall culture. I learned so much from my tour guide, who was both passionate and knowledgeable about the cistern itself as well as the surrounding area.
The combination of unique architecture, fascinating history, calming atmosphere, and creative programming make Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern one of the best unique things to do in Houston!

The park runs for over 160 acres, has long hiking and biking trails, plenty of green spaces and access to the water. This makes it the perfect spot for any outdoor enthusiast!
I've visited the park a few times over the years, and each time I find something new that I love about it. The best part is probably the views – you can get a great look at downtown Houston skyline from many spots in the park.
One of my favorite things to do at Buffalo Bayou Park is kayaking – there are lots of creeks and waterways to explore, so it's a perfect spot for an adventurous kayak trip! And if you don't own a kayak, they even have boat rentals available.
Other unique activities at Buffalo Bayou Park include nature walks with birding opportunities as well as night hikes in search of Houston’s local wildlife. It's also home to multiple art installations created by local artists that are worth checking out too.

I have been to plenty of unique spots around the city, but none quite like The Orange Show. It was created by a local artist, Jeff McKissack, in the 1960s and its purpose is to display his vision of a world in which art and imagination meet. With an incredible collection of folk art sculptures, murals, mosaics and other works of art, The Orange Show is truly a one-of-a-kind spot that everyone should experience.
The location itself is in the heart of Houston's East End Historic District and it's easy to find your way around. You might be surprised to see how much creativity flows throughout the entire area - from its vibrant colors to its intricate detailing.
I found myself captivated by Jeff's vision - it was bold and unconventional but also incredibly inspiring. I loved exploring all the different pieces he had on display and taking time to appreciate his unique artwork.
Overall, I believe The Orange Show is definitely one of the best unique things to do in Houston - there isn't anything quite like it anywhere else! It's an amazing place where you can get creative inspiration from one man's vision of artistry expressed through his work. Highly recommend!
